The network environment:
Blink Home Monitor devices connect with major servers over your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Some routers build 5 GHz networks that are accessible to your smartphone or tablet but not to bulk systems.
Important: Blink devices use the HTTP Protected port 443 to communicate (HTTPS). Your Blink system will not be able to communicate if port 443 is blocked.
To connect with Blink Home Monitor users, the Sync Module builds a private Wi-Fi network. According to the serial number of the Sync Module, this network is called “Blink-” followed by a four-digit number.
Both devices connected to the Sync Module and the Wi-Fi router must show three bars of connectivity to the Sync Module. Every device’s communication intensity is shown in the Blink app’s settings panel.
Sometimes, the device is configured near the sync module and the Wi-Fi router loses contact when placed in the final position. After having the device you should check the signal strength from the bulk app. If necessary, consider adding a range extender to the network.
Indoor and XT cameras in systems with Sync Modules can only attach to the same network as the Sync Module. The range extender must have the same network name (SSID) and password as the main Wi-Fi network for these cameras. This is referred to as “repeater mode.”
The characters “-ext” are immediately added to the end of the main Wi-Fi network name by certain range extenders.
Blink Home Monitor Outdoor, Indoor (gen2), and XT2 cameras will connect to a network with the same name as the main network with the additional characters of “-ext”. For example, an XT2 camera can connect to a repeater network named “House-EXT” when its Sync Module was configured on a network called “House”..when its Sync Module was set up on the network named “House”.
Powering your system: Blink Home Monitor
Two non-rechargeable Lithium AA batteries are used in the Indoor, XT, and XT2 cameras to provide 3 volts of constant power. Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion), Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH), and Alkaline AA batteries can operate for a short period of time, but then quickly fall below the 3-volt level. If you are experiencing short battery life, double-check that they’re non-rechargeable Lithium.
A camera or device on the outside of your wireless network will consume more battery power than a router, as the device will have to work harder to transfer data.
The Sync Module for Blink Home Monitor must be connected to a power source at all times. A standard 5 Volt 1 Amp USB source is used for this. The sync module is designed to retrieve network connections and communicates with MainPlus servers when the plugin is installed and works again.
If the Sync Module is installing a firmware update, there will be a startup delay. If your Sync Module isn’t responding, make sure it’s powered by the included power supply or one that’s rated at 5 volts and 1 amp. You can also look up your issue on the troubleshooting pages.
The Sync Module shows a red LED when it is offline, and the Blink app displays “No Sync Module” as a banner and on the thumbnails of the affected camera.
Camera Placement: Blink Home Monitor App
Blink cameras have a good motion detection feature that needs to be fine-tuned for the placement and size of the object you want to be alerted for. Good camera positioning is the most important part of improving the sensitivity of your camera
Since the Infrared detector in the XT and XT2 cameras is sensitive to heat variations, any source of heat in the viewing area could potentially trigger a motion warning. If your camera is facing a road and moving cars reflect sunlight at certain times of the day, it can see flashes of heat and motion. Tree motion from wind may also be a cause if your camera is looking at trees and the sun is behind them.
The Mini camera does not use infrared; instead, it relies on the difference between moments. Even in night mode with the Infrared illuminator turned on, visible motion activates the alarm.
Activity Zones – To help keep your camera focused, we’ve developed Camera Activity Zones so you can selectively disable motion detection in a small area of the camera view. This allows you to block areas with random motion, such as leaves flying, and receive motion alerts only from the areas you want.
Sensitivity – Blink Home Monitor cameras have a sensitivity setting to detect movement. Be careful when installing the camera and after selecting any activity zone, consider it as ‘fine tuning’.
Since each motion warning absorbs some battery power, having only specific alerts sent is beneficial.
Troubleshooting:
You may use complex troubleshooting techniques to solve the problem. Some cases necessitate the assistance of Technical Support. When you contact Technical Support, for example, and your Sync Module is just displaying a steady blue LED, the Agent will assist you in performing a firmware refresh.
